Press Release Education in Jordan: Between Stultification and Motivation (Translated)
Upon the announcement of the Tawjehi (general secondary examination) results of the summer cycle, Minister of Education Mohamad Al Thanybat said that he is "in excruciating pain" due to the high school test scores, noting that students from 342 schools sat for these summer cycle exams, and no one passed! Al Thanybat also stated in an interview with Jordanian television that the Tawjehi results for this period were "a huge depot in the history of Jordan since 20 years." The minister pointed at the existence of a flaw in this period which his ministry can't resolve in one year.
The percentage of success in the official exams has decreased from around 56% in the past 2 years to around 40% this year. More specifically, this percentage has decreased to 24% if one compares the percentage of success with the percentage of participants, as 35% of the participants did not sit for the exams for various reasons.
In other statements made by governmental officials with regards to the situation of education and the low level it has reached, the Minister himself mentioned in a previous statement, "Around 100,000 students, which is around 22% from the amount of students in the first three primary levels cannot read Arabic nor English letters."
Dr. Sawsan Al Majaly, the General Secretary of the People's Senate, said about high school education that "it is facing a weakness in its inputs and a decrease in the quality of education in all of its grades and levels."
The exam is an assessment of the abilities gained from the educational process and what is done by the best ministers which is controlling the test, but that is only the tip of the iceberg showing the reality of the educational policy's failure without revealing the reasons or solutions because it's outside the frame of change that the system doesn't want.
Observing the statements of the governmental officials about the reality of education, to sense the existence of a real and tragic crisis that is affecting the students and the children of the Ummah in all primary, high school, and university educational levels, resulted by the failed educational policy and the false care of the system's politics done to its children over the past decades.
The system is responsible for the consecutive failures of the educational system stopping it from establishing a successful educational policy suiting the children of the Ummah which is an Islamic Ummah. For example, more than 10 Ministers of Education succeeded each other within 8 years where the educational process was submissive to the desires, popular propitiation and political exploitation of the system.
The educational policies of the system has been ignored over decades as it identifies with the capitalistic system and the convenience of the enemies of the Ummah by changing the curricula to suit the West's war on Islam and by westernizing the children of the Ummah. In addition, this has led to the shaping of a reality that isn't sincerely caring for the children of the Ummah who now suffer from the weakness and malignity of these curricula being inadequate content- and context-wise. These curricula falsify history, denaturize tastes, contort tongues, diminish the brain's perception, kill creativity, contempt Islamic values, and beautify sins and the rotten capitalistic secular values.
It is this reality that is sensed by the children of the Ummah and every honest thinker, as they see that the Islamic Ummah is able to come up with educational policies, strategic programs, and original methods to bring back its outstanding rank in the golden ages.
Hizb ut Tahrir, with what it has from awareness and attentiveness and the ongoing continuous work it does with the Ummah and through it, has come up with a policy for education as part of the constitutional project for the Khilafah "Caliphate" Al-Rashidah state which the Hizb works for its establishment and the elevation of the Ummah's rank beyond all other nations, and the most important points of this are the following:
- The educational system in the Khilafah "Caliphate" state compromises from a group of Shariah rulings and administrative rules related to the educational curriculum. The Shariah rulings related to education emanate from the Aqeedah and have judicial evidence such as the taught content and the separation between male and female students.
- As for the administrative rules in education, they are the allowed means and methods that the administration regards as effective to implement the system and achieve its goals. These are materialistic matters that are prone to development and change to suit and implement the Shariah rulings that are related to education and the important needs of the Ummah. In addition, these matters can be chosen from what other states have reached via permissible experimentation, experience, and research.
- The educational policy is for developing the Islamic mentality and the Islamic Nafsiyyah (disposition). That is why all of the subject areas that is needed to be taught should be based on this policy.
- The objective of education is to form the Islamic personality and provide people with the sciences and networks related to life's affairs. So, the educational techniques are made to achieve this objective and prevent all paths straying away from this objective.
- There should be a distinction made in education between experimental sciences, inclusive what is related to it such as Mathematics, and cultural studies. Experimental sciences and what is related to it will be taught as per need, and is not tied to any level of the educational levels. As for cultural studies, they are taken in the primary levels before the higher ones according to a specific policy that doesn't contradict with Islam and its rules. As for the higher levels, these studies are taken just like science as long as it doesn't lead to straying away from the educational policy and its objective.
- The educational curriculum is one, and no other except for the state's curriculum is allowed. No indigenous schools will be stopped as long as it is restricted to the state's curriculum, established on an educational plan, and committed to achieve the educational policy and its objective. As such, education should not allow mingling between males and females neither among students nor teachers, and it shouldn't side with a specific sect, religion, Madhab (school of thought), ethnicity or color.
- The state preps the libraries, laboratories and all types of information outlets outside schools and universities to grant a chance to those who would like to pursue researches in different paths of knowledge such as Fiqh, Hadith, Tafsir, Islamic thinking, medicine, engineering and chemistry, and engage in invention, discovery and others, so that there can be a huge group of Mujtahideen, innovators and inventors in the Ummah.
O Muslims, O Teachers, O Students: We, at Hizb ut Tahrir, sincerely invite you to work towards the system that Allah (swt) is pleased with to lead your life and He bestowed it to organize life's affairs in governance, economics, sociology, education, and health in accordance with His Rulings under the shade of His state... The state of Khilafah "Caliphate", which will care about you in the best way, will defend you, will safeguard you and your family, will protect your blood (from being spilled unjustly) and your wealth in order to live decently with dignity, respect, and tranquility. In this way, you can gain Allah's (swt) pleasure and you enjoy His blessings in live and in the Afterlife.
