The West is Scared that Artificial Intelligence will Expose the Fragility of their Way of Life

News:

Rishi Sunak is scrambling to update the government’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence, amid warnings that the industry poses an existential risk to humanity unless countries radically change how they allow the technology to be developed.

The prime minister and his officials are looking at ways to tighten the UK’s regulation of cutting-edge technology, as industry figures warn the government’s AI white paper, published just two months ago, is already out of date.

Government sources have told the Guardian the prime minister is increasingly concerned about the risks posed by AI, only weeks after his chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, said he wanted the UK to “win the race” to develop the technology.

On Monday, British officials will join their counterparts from other G7 member countries to discuss AI’s implications for intellectual property protections and disinformation. (Source: The Guardian)

Comment:

Large Language Models (LLM) such as ChatGPT recently brought the advances in technology to the fore, due to its unprecedented ability to mimic human conversations. It has no ability to understand anything, but is fast proving itself to be a useful tool for a variety of tasks. As with any tool, it can be used by a user for good and bad. This is the case with all technological advances, from electricity to atomic energy.

Of great concern to the elite group of capitalists who run western nations, and through their colonial agent over the world, anything that could threaten their hegemony. Among themselves they squabble to have the upper hand, relying heavily on controlling advanced technologies, to prevent their rivals from it.

The ability of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to disrupt the well-controlled power hierarchies worries them profoundly. Military applications of AI may render much of their war and defence strategies obsolete. Their ability to control information may also be challenged, placing the dominant narrative in someone else’s hands, even undermining the official narrative on events. The already corrupt financial systems may even collapse once AI is introduced, rapidly giving control of whole economies to individuals who get there first. Such is the fragility of the entire Western societal facade.

Freedom of thought or belief are not such cherished values for the capitalist elites. Nor is freedom of ownership, as the current worry over AI regulation demonstrates.

For all the talk of existential threats and superhuman AI taking over the world, for now these are merely scaremongering tactics to steer public opinion to favour regulation, until one of them is in the winning position, when all regulation will henceforth be removed.
