Muslim becomes London Mayor

On 6th May 2016, Sadiq Khan was elected as Mayor of London and became the first Muslim to adopt such a position. This was of the back of a "Muslim centric" election campaign where Islamic values were constantly on the agenda. From political Islam to hijab, every topic under the spectrum was attacked and degraded by the candidates involved. However, two things became clear from this entire episode. The first is the attempt by Britain to restore the confidence of an increasingly sceptical Muslim community about British values. The second is the fact that involvement within secular democratic system requires an individual to forego their values, as displayed by Sadiq Khan. Whilst the Muslims were split on the issue, they have indeed questioned their place in the West as the Ummah in all corners of the world continues to edge towards an Islamic revival.

Purge in Bangladesh Continues

The Awami League’s latest victim in its crusade against Islam is the head of Jamaat-e-Islami, Motiur Rahman Nizami. Nizami was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail at one minute past midnight local time on Wednesday after the Supreme Court rejected his final plea against a death sentence imposed by a Kangaroo tribunal for genocide, rape and orchestrating the massacre of top intellectuals during the war of independence. The Awami League which consists of atheists and communists set up this tribunal in order to deal with the Islamic resurgence in the country. It has used these courts to crack down on Islam and those calling for it. The courts themselves follow little rule of law and are designed to find quality those that lead the Islamic call in the country

Pakistan Civil-Military slapped by US

The US informed Pakistan that it will have to finance the purchase of US F-16 fighter jets itself after members of the U.S. Congress objected to the use of government funds to pay for them. The US government said in February it had approved the sale to Pakistan of up to eight F-16 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin. Despite providing Washington unstinting support for over a decade in its war in Afghanistan, Pakistan is slapped across it face in return. This episode has shown once again that the short term economic benefits Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership pursue will only give them more and more humiliation, as this latest episode shows.
