Press Release
State Policies Create Social Discord and Violence

A little-known Perth-based ‘think-tank' claiming ‘independent strategic analysis of Australia's global interests' published a paper this week about Hizb ut Tahrir. Riddled with errors of fact and scant of anything that can be called analysis the paper simply regurgitates a tired and discredited narrative about Hizb ut Tahrir. The 4-page article based entirely on secondary sources, primarily newspaper articles, reads more like a high-school essay completed in a rush rather than a think-tank paper.

Bad research at best and cheap propaganda in the name of independent analysis at worst, the paper - whose author did not bother contacting Hizb u Tahrir for this work - is not worthy of a proper response. Anyone seeking accurate information about Hizb ut Tahrir and its work in Australia and abroad can find it with ease on our website. Here we will only emphasise the following points:

1. Hizb ut Tahrir is not a new or unknown entity. It is a well-known party globally with an established record of activism over six decades, in some of the harshest conditions under (Western-backed) dictatorships in the Muslim World. The idea that Hizb ut Tahrir may change, become violent or do this or that is utterly baseless.

2. Social discord between Muslims and non-Muslims is not created by the political activism of Hizb ut Tahrir, but by the irresponsible and exploitative actions of the powerful institutions of society, mainstream media and policymakers in particular. The persistent demonisation of Islam in media and unjust policies by policymakers that target Muslims such as the anti-terror laws and the imposition of a state-sanctioned version of Islam (‘moderate Islam') are what create disharmony and sow the seeds for more severe problems.

3. Expressing concern about violence that may occur by individuals or groups, whilst ignoring the ruthless violence currently perpetuated by states openly is the height of hypocrisy. Anyone sincerely concerned by violence should start by holding to account Australian policymakers responsible for inflicting the worst types of violence in Afghanistan and Iraq and for supporting brutal dictators in the Muslim World. The potential violence of any ‘lone actors' pales in significance.

4. Western foreign policy is the primary cause of terrorism. Hizb ut Tahrir will continue to expose the policy and actions of Western Governments, without fear or favour, undeterred by cheap attempts of blame-shifting.
